Using Marker in lyrik.fm

Pick Marker on the Style step: your lyrics are hand-lettered in big capitals, written stroke by stroke as you sing, on paper, a chalkboard or an old TV screen.

What it looks like

• Capitals written on by marker, stroke by stroke, as you sing.
• Chorus power words fill the width, and verse lines stack as rows.
• Hand-drawn marks. Featured words get a circle, underline, box, arrow or burst, with doodles around a stanza.
• On paper, the camera glides and swings over the sheet. Each chorus cuts to coloured paper, and the last chorus moves to a dark board in light ink.
• Off paper, the words sit on an old TV screen over space, a tunnel, liquid, haze or old film.
• A Chalkboard, in soft chalk colours from your cover, written on and wiped off as the song goes.

Best for

• Pop anthems, dance-pop, afropop and gospel-pop hooks, pop-punk and rock.
• Mid to high energy, roughly 80 to 165 BPM.
• Big, repeated choruses: it writes your chorus huge.
• Any cover.

How to make it

1. On the Style step ('Pick a style.'), find Marker. On a phone, tap the Style tab first.
2. Tap or click the card to see your clip (your first chorus, to start with) written out.
3. Choose a Font, a colour under Colour · from your cover, and a Lyric size.
4. Open More ways to tweak it (the More tab on a phone) for the background, Camera, Doodles, Screen effect and Paper motion.
5. Press Shuffle for new doodles and wobble. Undo goes back.
6. Check both shapes, then press Download · from £4.99$5.99€5.99CA$8.99A$8.99.

Font availability depends on your lyrics. Colour choices can depend on the cover, and the Ad-libs row needs marked ad-libs.

Marker letters every word in capitals and lays out the page itself. The panel says 'Marker chooses the capitals and where the lyrics sit for you.'

Tips for great results

• Tag your chorus. Marker's power words come from the chorus, so a clearly marked [Chorus] makes the most of it. See How do I mark choruses, verses and repeats?
• Pick the featured words. The big word on each line is the one that gets a circle or underline. Choose them under Big words in More ways to tweak it.
• Want it calmer? Try Gentle or Still under Camera, and Calm under Energy.
• Too busy? Turn Doodles off.

16:9 and 9:16

• 16:9 writes lines across the sheet, with the camera gliding over it.
• 9:16 writes one to three words a row, up to five rows. The power word fits the width of the area TikTok, Reels and Shorts leave clear, writing starts from its left edge, and the camera swings half as much.

Languages

• The Marker and Scrawl fonts only cover Western European letters. For songs with other letters, those chips grey out and the song is written in Felt tip.
• If Felt tip can't set your lyrics either (for example Twi ɛ ɔ or the hooked Hausa letters), the song is written in Round.
• Doodles that react to particular words only know English words. In other languages you still get circles, underlines and boxes on the big words.

Good to know

• Colour, size, ad-libs and energy carry across if you switch style. Marker remembers its own font, background and rows.
• Shuffle gives every style a new take, not just Marker.
• Previewing is free. Your first eligible clip is free too; other downloads use credits.

If something goes wrong

• 'Your lyrics use letters Marker doesn’t have, so we’re showing a font that has them.' Your lyrics include letters the Marker font can't draw, so the song is written in a matching hand instead. Pick Felt tip, Round, Tall or Clean to choose for yourself.
• The camera movement is too much. Set Camera to Gentle or Still (on a Paper background).
• The picture flickers. That's Paper motion on Stop-motion. Choose Still.

Hidden extras

• The Chalkboard background wipes the board clean as the song moves on.
• On a computer, press S for new doodles and F to switch shape.
