How do I change the colours?
Ready-made colour sets from your cover, plus a hidden trick to swap them round.
Most styles take their colours from your cover (Flicker stays black and white), and the Colour · from your cover row gives you ready-made colour sets to choose from; tap the one you've picked again to swap its colours round.
Step by step
- Find Colour · from your cover. On a phone, tap the Colour tab.
- Each chip is a small swatch with 'Aa' on it, so you can see the background and the lyric colour together. Tap one. The preview changes at once.
- On Main colour, Bold colour, Pop or Two-ink, tap the chip you've chosen again to swap its colours round. Keep tapping to see up to four versions, then it comes back to the first.
- Want a colour of your own? Tap + Your colour. See Can I use my own brand colour?
What each chip means
| Chip | What it does |
|---|---|
| Our pick | Colours we picked from your cover. Every style starts here. |
| Light | A light background with dark lyrics. |
| Dark | A dark background with light lyrics. |
| Main colour | Built around the main colour of your cover. |
| Bold colour | Built around the boldest colour on your cover. |
| Pop | Dark, with one bright colour that stands out. |
| Muted | Soft greys with a hint of your cover. |
| Two-ink | The whole picture printed in two inks from your cover, one dark and one bright. Only in Xerox, Xerox Poster, Broadside, Behind and Ransom. |
| Named sets, such as Neon, Pink & blue or Deep blue | Ready-made colours chosen by the style's designer. |
| + Your colour | Any colour you like. |
You won't always see every chip:
- Light and Dark only appear in styles that have them. When a style's Our pick already follows how light or dark your cover is, you only see the other one.
- If two chips would look almost the same on your cover, we show just one.
- Named sets fill the row up to five choices. Deck always shows all of its sets.
Good to know
- Colour follows you from style to style. Pick Pop in one style and every style uses its own Pop. If a style doesn't offer the choice you made, it shows its Our pick, and your choice comes back when you switch to a style that has it.
- Departure is different. It only has Our pick and + Your colour. Its sign has its own Light colour row under More ways to tweak it.
- Your lyrics stay readable. Whatever you pick, we keep enough contrast between the lyrics and the background.
- No cover art? The colours come from the stand-in cover we made for you. See I don’t have cover art yet. What happens if I skip it?
- Changing colours is free and instant.
If something goes wrong
- The colours look nothing like my cover. A cover that's mostly black, white or grey gives us few colours to work with. Try Main colour or Bold colour, or set your own with + Your colour.
- I tapped a chip and the colours flipped. You tapped a Main colour, Bold colour, Pop or Two-ink chip that was already chosen, which swaps its colours round. Tap it again until you're back where you were (there are four versions), or pick another chip.
- Reset style changed my colour in every style. Colour is shared by all styles, so Reset style puts it back to Our pick everywhere. See How do I undo my changes or reset a style?
Hidden extras
- Tap again to swap. Tapping a chosen Main colour, Bold colour, Pop or Two-ink chip again swaps the colours round. With a mouse the tip says 'Click again to swap the colours round'. The tip only shows on a chip that swaps. In Xerox and Xerox Poster, only Two-ink swaps when you tap it again.
- Two-ink tries other inks too. Each tap on a chosen Two-ink chip gives you the other way round or a different pair of inks from your cover.
