Is there a lyrics template I can copy?
A copy-and-paste example that uses every formatting rule.
Yes: copy the example below, swap in your own words, and keep the brackets, tags and blank lines as they are.
The template
The words are made up. Replace them with your own lyrics.
[Intro]
(ooh, ooh)
[Verse 1: Sam]
Paper boats along the gutter
Racing to the drain (yeah)
Coats still drying on the chair
Kettle on again
[Chorus]
Count the buses going by
Count them till you're home x2
Every window has a light on
(light on)
[Verse 2: Jo]
Postcards stuck behind the mirror
Corners curling up
Someone's humming down the hallway
Half a song is still enough
[Chorus]
[Bridge: Sam & Jo]
Slow down, slow down
Let the streetlights catch us up
(repeat)
[Outro]
Count them till you're home
What each part does
- '[Intro]', '[Chorus]', '[Bridge]', '[Outro]' on their own lines name the sections. They never show as lyrics in your video. A tagged chorus is the surest way to get chorus effects and a clip that starts on the chorus.
- '(ooh, ooh)' on its own line is an ad-lib. Styles show ad-libs smaller or at the side.
- '(yeah)' at the end of a line becomes its own small ad-lib line, after 'Racing to the drain'.
- '[Verse 1: Sam]' and '[Verse 2: Jo]' name who sings. The first name is the lead and the second is the duet side, so styles can give each voice its own side or colour.
- 'x2' at the end of a line means that line is sung twice.
- The empty '[Chorus]' after verse 2 repeats the whole first chorus, ad-libs and all.
- '[Bridge: Sam & Jo]' is sung by both, so it counts as the lead side.
- '(repeat)' on its own line sings the stanza just above it again, here the two bridge lines.
- Blank lines start a new stanza. They help us find your chorus when you don’t tag it.
What you’ll see
- Under the lyrics box: '17 lines. We’ll tidy the tags, repeats and ad-libs.'
- On the Sync screen: 'All 21 lines'. The number is bigger because the repeats are written out for you, and ad-lib lines aren’t counted.
Don’t do this
- '(Repeat chorus)' after a verse. It repeats that verse, not the chorus. Use an empty '[Chorus]' instead.
- 'Chorus:' or 'Chorus x2' without square brackets. It becomes a sung line, so 'Chorus' shows in your video.
- 'x9' or more. Counts only work from 2 to 8. Above that, the count stays in your lyrics. Write the lines out instead.
- Names at the start of a line, like 'Sam: hello'. The name stays in your lyrics as sung words. Put the name in the section tag instead.
- Square or curly brackets for ad-libs, like '[ad lib]' or '{echo}', in the middle of a line. Only round brackets make an ad-lib.
Good to know
- Write out or mark every repeat the singer sings. Missing repeats are the biggest cause of bad sync, and lines can’t be added after upload.
- '(x2)', '2x' and '×2' work the same as 'x2'. A line ending '(repeat)' is sung twice.
- '[Chorus x2]' sings the lines under that tag twice.
- A backing part over several lines can go inside one pair of round brackets: open on the first line, close on the last (up to 8 lines, with no blank line or tag inside). Each line becomes an ad-lib.
- Paste your own lyrics. lyrik never supplies lyrics.
If something goes wrong
- A line or repeat is missing on the Sync screen. Start a new video with the same audio file and paste the lyrics again with the fix. If it’s the very same file, syncing it again can be free. See Starting another project with the same audio
- Sync says 'We hear singing at 1:23, 2:45 that no line starts on.' A repeat is probably missing from your lyrics. See Sync says ‘We hear singing at 1:23 that no line starts on’. What does that mean?
More on each rule: How do I mark choruses, verses and repeats?, How do I mark ad-libs and backing vocals, and can I hide them? and How do I show a duet or a featured singer?
