How do I mark ad-libs and backing vocals, and can I hide them?
Use round brackets; ad-libs show smaller, can be hidden in the studio and are left out of LRC captions.
Put ad-libs and backing vocals in round brackets, like '(yeah)', and lyrik shows them smaller or to the side, and lets you hide them.
How to mark them
- Put a short ad-lib on its own line:
(yeah) - Or put it at the end of the sung line:
we run the night (run it). The part in brackets becomes its own ad-lib line. - For backing vocals over several lines, open the round bracket on the first line and close it on the last:
(oh, the lights go
down on the water
one more time)
Each of those lines becomes an ad-lib. This works for up to 8 lines, with no blank line or tag inside.
How ad-libs look
- Styles show ad-libs smaller, or out in the margin. Each style does it its own way.
- On the Sync screen, ad-lib lines are in italics.
- Tap along skips ad-lib lines, so you only tap the main lines.
Hide or show them in your video
- In the studio, open More ways to tweak it (on a phone, the More tab).
- Find the Ad-libs row.
- Tap Show or Hide.
Hiding removes only the ad-lib lines. Every other line keeps its timing. The row only appears when your song has ad-lib lines. If it has none, you’ll see 'No ad-libs in your lyrics. You can mark them in Sync.'
Mark or unmark a line after upload
- On the Sync screen, tap More tools.
- Select the line.
- Tap Ad-lib to switch it between a main line and an ad-lib.
Good to know
- Only round brackets count. '[ad lib]' or '{echo}' in the middle of a line stay part of the sung line.
- Keep brackets at the end of a line or on their own line. Brackets in the middle of a line split it into separate lines around the ad-lib.
- A '(' with no ')' is left alone.
- Ad-libs are left out of the LRC synced-lyrics file and out of the lyrics in the YouTube copy pack. The SRT captions keep them, in brackets.
- An ad-lib line can’t have a big word.
- If you want words in brackets to show as a main line, write them without brackets.
