Using Folio in lyrik.fm

Your song as a magazine feature: each line a pull-quote, your cover in a picture window.

Pick Folio on the Style step: your song is laid out as a magazine feature, with each line a pull-quote and your cover in a picture window.

What it looks like

  • A printed magazine page. A running head with your song title and artist name, a page number, a thin rule, and a heading for each part of the song, such as VERSE II or CHORUS.
  • Your cover as a figure. It sits in a two-colour picture window with a caption such as 'FIG. 1'.
  • Pull-quotes. Each line is a serif quote that fills with ink as you sing it.
  • One big word. The hook or title word is set big in a fixed spot on the page.
  • Page turns. Each new part of the song turns the page. Choruses open into a two-page spread, and the bridge is a black page in italics.

Best for

  • Indie, folk, singer-songwriter, R&B, ballads and conscious rap.
  • Calm to mid energy, roughly 50 to 125 BPM.
  • Songs with space in them: it gives every line its own page.
  • Light covers suit it best, but any cover works.

How to make it

  1. On the Style step ('Pick a style.'), find Folio. On a phone, tap the Style tab first.
  2. Tap or click the card to see your clip (your first chorus, to start with) as a magazine spread.
  3. Choose a Font, a colour under Colour · from your cover, and a Lyric size.
  4. Open More ways to tweak it (the More tab on a phone) for the paper, Capitals and Energy.
  5. Press Shuffle for new page layouts. Undo goes back.
  6. Check both shapes, then press Download · from £4.99$5.99€5.99CA$8.99A$8.99.

Font availability depends on your lyrics. Colour choices can depend on the cover, and the Ad-libs row needs marked ad-libs.

Folio lays out each page itself, so the panel says 'Folio chooses where the lyrics sit for you.'

Tips for great results

  • Check your title and artist name before you upload. They print on every page in the running head. See How do I set the song title and artist name?
  • Tag your sections. Folio names each part of the song on the page, so tags such as [Verse 2] and [Bridge] help. See How do I mark choruses, verses and repeats?
  • Choose the big word. Under Big words in More ways to tweak it, pick the word on each line that goes big.
  • Try Dark for a late-night feel. If Cream & ink shows in your colour row, it gives an old printed look.

16:9 and 9:16

  • 16:9 shows a full page, and choruses open into a two-page spread.
  • 9:16 shows one page, not a spread. The picture window becomes a full-width band under the lyrics, the chorus page turns to your accent colour, and pages turn from the left edge.

Languages

  • Original and Modern move to matching fonts for songs with the hooked Hausa letters (ɓ ɗ ƙ ƴ).
  • Bold sans uses the same matching font as Modern for those songs.

Good to know

  • Folio offers only Small and Medium, so the page's big word always fits the frame.
  • Colour, size, capitals, ad-libs and energy carry across if you switch style. Folio remembers its own font and paper.
  • Shuffle gives every style a new take, not just Folio.
  • Previewing is free. Your first eligible clip is free too; other downloads use credits.

If something goes wrong

  • A typo in the running head. The title and artist name can't be changed after upload. Start a new video with the same audio file and the right spelling. If it’s the very same file, syncing it again can be free. See Starting another project with the same audio.
  • A font chip is greyed out. Tap it to see the letters it lacks.

Hidden extras

  • The section headings come from your lyrics' tags and the parts lyrik finds in the music, so a well-tagged song reads like a real feature.
  • On a computer, press S for new page layouts and F to switch shape.
